Energy-efficient LED lighting at train stations increases safety
In spring 2025, travellers at eight train stations in Norway can feel even safer as the car parks have been given new and improved lighting. The upgrade was carried out by Bravida, ensuring an energy-efficient and sustainable solution for Bane NOR.
In 2022, Bane NOR took over the operation of several train stations in the Eastern Norway area. The lighting in all the car parks was both inadequate and poorly maintained, and Bane NOR wanted to upgrade and improve the situation to ensure increased safety for train passengers.
Bravida Norway was commissioned by Bane NOR to carry out the upgrade with new and sustainable LED lighting in the car parks of the train stations in Asker, Lørenskog, Lillestrøm, Frogner and Dal, as well as Eidsvoll, Kløfta and Grorud. The work has included both mapping and upgrading the existing system, as well as planning and designing a new and better lighting system. When the work is completed, all eight stations will have energy-efficient and sustainable LED lighting installed. LED lights have a significantly higher luminous output and the cost savings mean that the systems will be paid off in a short time.
Work already began in 2023, with Asker, Lørenskog, Lillestrøm, Frogner and Dal stations. All stations are now completed, except for Asker. Only one power supply remains, as it has been a challenge to find the right solution.
In 2024, improvements were made to the car parks at Eidsvoll, Grorud and Kløfta stations. The first two have been completed, while Kløfta will probably not be finished until February this year, as a lamp delivery has been delayed.
Hans-Olav Røtterud, Service Manager at Bravida, explains that Bane NOR has been concerned about the safety of passengers, and not only wanted to replace existing lighting, but also to erect new lighting columns, as they felt it was highly necessary.
– The biggest challenge has probably been that when Bane NOR recently took over the operation of these stations, it wasn't just the lighting and maintenance that were inadequate. Bane NOR also lacked a complete overview of the facilities when it came to cabling, power supplies and the like, says Hans-Olav Røtterud.
The unexpected situation therefore entailed some extra mapping work and the need to find new solutions, which led to some of the projects being extended in relation to completion dates.
– I'd say that's exactly what we're good at at Bravida – expertise, implementation capacity and finding the right solutions, says Hans-Olav Røtterud.
It was important for Bane NOR to upgrade the lighting, as they were going to take over the operation of the car parks themselves, and little maintenance had already been carried out. At the same time, it was decided to switch to LED lighting, as this is both cost-effective in terms of energy consumption and the phasing out of existing light sources.
– As a serious player in the market, Bravida must contribute to the best solutions for our customers. "Bane NOR was keen to find a good and lasting solution even though it could be more costly than planned in the short term, says Hans-Olav Røtterud.
Bravida has collaborated with the lamp supplier and Bane NOR to prepare lighting calculations and good solutions, as well as designing and improving the cabling network so that it complies with current standards. As mentioned, the old facilities were in pretty poor condition.
Even though turnover has been relatively high, staffing levels have been modest. Most of Bravida’s work has been carried out by a service manager, who has been responsible for planning and implementation, as well as one or two fitters who have carried out the actual work. In addition, they have also carried out some excavation work done by one or two people.
– The entire project is expected to be completed in spring 2025. Not only will passengers feel safer, but Bane NOR can expect less maintenance and major cost savings over time, concludes Hans-Olav Røtterud.
